EXHIBITION/EVENT (English below)

EXHIBITION/EVENT

EN / Topp & Dubio continue their research project on the sculptural installation ‘Bust of Stalin with Herring’ by artists Vitaly Komar and Alexander Melamid. The work originates from 1986 when it was made for the Red Light district in The Hague, After a period of degradation and decay, it was eventuallly restored and re-installed at a location near the Gemeentemuseum in 2002. Topp & Dubio consider the installation with the bronze bust of Stalin as the most relevant and challenging public work of art in The Hague.

During ‘a_Day_to_Clay_a_Bust’, Topp & Dubio will install a temporary working space in a private apartment and use it as a studio to sculpt a bust of clay. Topp & Dubio have never sculpted a figurative bust during the twenty years of their collaboration. The project is an hommage to their own art practice as well as a method to renew their relationship to ‘Bust of Stalin with Herring’. And it is a temporary return to classical sculpture in which the artists, in contrast to Komar & Melamid, have never been trained.

The project consists of three stages which are all open to the public:
Thursday - installation working space and material for the bust to make
Friday - working sessions bust (daytime) and live presentation (from 19:00 h)
Saturday - evaluation, interventions and documentation

The event will be documented by filmmaker Gerard Holthuis (who started as a sculptor at first).
